NewJeans (Hangul: 뉴진스) is a South Korean girl group formed by ADOR, consisting of five members: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein. They made their debut on August 1, 2022, with their first EP, New Jeans.
History[]
2019–2022: Pre-debut[]
On July 1, 2019, HYBE (then-known as Big Hit) announced that Min Hee Jin would join the company as their new CBO (Chief Brand Officer), and one of her tasks would be to lead a seven-member girl group project between BigHit and Source Music.[1][2]
On September 4, 2019, the Plus Global Auditions were announced. Auditions were held in 16 cities and lasted until the end of October.[3] By the end of 2019, casting had been completed and training began at the beginning of 2020.[4]
By September 2021, the group's management was transferred to ADOR.[5]
On November 21, 2021, HYBE officially announced the launch of a new independent label, ADOR, which is under the agency. The label planed to launch a new girl group in 2022 and will be mainly produced by the label's CEO, Min Hee-jin, and primarily consisting of members that were recruited during HYBE's Plus Global Audition in 2019.[6]
On March 3, 2022, Min Hee Jin revealed that thel group's debut would be specifically be in the third quarter of the year.[7]
2022: Debut, Tell Me (FRNK Remix) Performance, Award Shows, 2023 Seasons Greetings[]
On July 1, the first teaser videos were released on various social media websites, and it was also announced that the group would release their first content on the 22nd.[8]
On July 22, the group released the debut music video for the track "Attention" with five members, and the debut schedule for their first EP, New Jeans, to be released digitally on August 1 and physically on August 8.[9] Teaser photos were released that same day.[10] They consequently released their interactive music video "Hype Boy", officially revealing the members' names. On August 1, 2022, the music video for New Jeans's third and final title track "Cookie" was released.
On December 25,2022 NewJeans Performed their version of “Tell Me” by ex JYP girl group, Wonder Girls, at SBS Gayo Daejeon. The performance went viral on social media and K-pop dance cover groups even started covering the dance in public.
NewJeans also performed at various music award shows in 2022(49th Korea Broadcasting awards,2022 The Fact Music Awards, 43rd Blue Dragon Awards, MMA, Asia Artist Awards, SBS Entertainment Awards, and the 37th Golden Disc Awards, which brought them home many awards such as Performance of the year, Rookie of the year, DMC Popularity award - Female Singer, Asia celebrity award, Best Choice award, Fabulous award, Hot Trend award, Singer of the year, Song of the year, Popularity award - Singer (female), Top 20 Songs of the year (Overseas/Hype Boy)[11]
On December 7th,2022 the 2023 NewJeans Seasons Greetings was released. The average price for the seasons greetings is around 50.85 United States dollars.[12]
2023: First comeback, PAK, Powerpuff Girls Collaboration, Super Shy, Get Up, Lollapalooza, First remix album, 22-23 Yearbook, Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve[]
On December 11, 2022 "Ditto" was announced as the pre-release single for the upcoming single album OMG, set for release in January 2023. "Ditto" premiered on on December 19, 2022, followed by "OMG" on January 2, 2023. On February 2, 2023, "Ditto" achieved the most "Perfect All-Kill"s in K-pop history, surpassing IU's "Celebrity" and BTS's "Dynamite".
On July 7, 2023 NewJeans released their 2nd pre release single album with the tracks "New Jeans", and "Super Shy". Both M/V’s premiered on HYBE’s official YouTube channel. The M/V for New Jeans served as an intro to their second EP, Get Up, and as a collaboration with The Powerpuff Girls.
On July 21, 2023, NewJeans returned with their third EP, Get Up.
On a certain date in March 2023, it was announced that NewJeans would make their first ever U.S performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago, Illinois. The performance gained over 70,000 spectators, with fans singing along to the songs they performed. NewJeans also made history as the first ever K-pop girl group to perform at the music festival.
On December 11, 2023, the 22-23 Yearbook was released for sale. Prior to the release of the yearbook, the set was promoted on various social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. The 2024 seasons greetings was also released a day after the yearbook was released.
To close off the year of NewJeans, NJWMX was released on December 19, 2023 (a year after their first pre release single, Ditto). The album featured tracks such as Attention (250 Remix), OMG (FRNK Remix), and Ditto (250 Remix). The album was described by ADOR as a “Winter Celebration” and for fans to reflect on the amount of time NewJeans has spent with them through the past year.
On December 31, 2023 NewJeans performed at Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve which was held in New York City, New York. It has been noted that NewJeans performed in SK for New Years Rockin' Eve due to time zones and other factors. NewJeans also made history as the first K-pop girl group to perform at the event. They performed Super Shy and ETA, which both songs are from their second EP Get Up.

NewJeans’ first performance of the year was at Billboard Women In Music which was held at the YouTube theater in Inglewood, California, US. NewJeans also made history (again) as the second K-pop girl group to perform at the award show, following fellow girl group, TWICE. They performed on March 6, 2024.[13]
On March 26, 2024 KST, ADOR announced a ‘Surprise’ comeback, and a Japanese debut through Phoning. The first comeback single album How Sweet was released on May 24, 2024 and Japanese debut album Supernatural was released on June 21, 2024. The Japanese debut was promoted in Japan via commercials and music shows. In the letter, ADOR also gave hints at a world tour for 2025. Fans also speculated that NewJeans would release a second album during the second half of 2024. On that same day, it was also announced that NewJeans held a fan meeting at the TOKYO DOME in Tokyo, Japan June 26-27, 2024. [14]
On April 10, 2024 KST, it was announced that fellow group member Hyein would be on a temporary hiatus due to a foot fracture.[15]
On April 26, 2024 KST, the M/V for Bubble Gum was released via HYBE’s official YouTube channel. On the same day, a trailer was released for the ‘Right Now’ M/V[16], will also include a collaboration with Takashi Murakami, a Japanese artist who is famous for his iconic rainbow flower design. This marked as NewJeans’ second collaboration, following their previous collaboration with The Powerpuff Girls.
In July 2024, NewJeans made their first OT5 appearance on multiple music shows, prior to Hyein's foot injury.
On July 21, 2024 KST, ADOR announced via social media outlets and Phoning, that there would be a NewJeans Day on Air livestream via YouTube to celebrate NewJeans' second debut anniversary from 00:00 through 19:00 KST on July 22. It was also announced that there would be surprise outtakes during the live stream. Content included variety shows, performances, MVs and dance practices.
On November 28, NewJeans held a press conference to announce their decision to terminate their contracts with ADOR and their wishes to continue as a group using the original NewJeans brand, even if they will not be able to due to legal issues.[17]
On December 14, NewJeans opened their own Instagram account not affiliated with ADOR, jeanzforfree. Within hours of the account opening, it had gained a million followers, which makes jeanzforfree becoming the fastest instagram account to gain 1 million followers in K-pop history.
On January 22, 2025, NewJeans announced on their instagram account (@jeanzforfree) they are opening suggestions for a group name to use temporarily until their debut.
On February 7, 2025, the five members announced that the new group name would be "NJZ".
On March 23, NJZ made their debut with “Pit Stop”, at the ComplexCon in Hong Kong. On the same day, they announced their seemingly indefinite hiatus.
On April 5, 2025, all NJZ social media accounts were wiped clean, fulfilling that their hiatus is indefinite until their contract termination in July of 2029.
